| Sex in the News: Variety is the spice of India's sex life |
Posted on Friday, October 17 @ 00:44:33 CDT

Hum kisise kam nahin! When it comes to experimenting with sex, the 2003 Durex Global Sex Survey conducted among 34 countries reveals that Indians are right up there on the global charts. India beats all competition in the Asia-Pacific region and ranks as the eighth most amorous nation worldwide.
Figures show that 71 per cent of Indians are satisfied with their sex lives, putting India low down among Asian countries, but more happily placed than the UK (66 per cent) and the US (64 per cent).
Sample this: 36 per cent Indians have a preference for pleasure-enhancing condoms — a figure that is close to the world average of 39 per cent. Similarly, 26 per cent Indians use lubricants, almost coinciding with the world average of 27 per cent; while 28 per cent of Indians surveyed have had phone or virtual sex and 26 per cent of Indians use lubricants — far less than the Australians (68 per cent), who are the keenest users in the world.
"This is because a majority of Indians are not yet open to experimentation. We are still not a sexually-open society — there are always moral and taboo factors attached to our stereotypical thinking," says sex expert Dr Prakash Kothari.
Frequency-wise, Indians have sex 138 times a year or 2.65 times per week (roughly once every three days) which presents an impressive figure when compared with the US (118), the UK (135) and Italy (119).
Incidentally, just under a quarter (24 per cent) of Indians say they have had a one-night stand. "One-night stands do not conform to fidelity," says psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh, MD. “Our traditional thought process attaches more importance to marriage and commitment than sexuality. It’s a fact that India’s social-support system and family dynamics have improved. This translates into enhanced sexuality,” says psychiatrist Samir Parikh, MD.
Simultaneously, 17 per cent of Indians admit to having paid for sex — higher than the world average of 11 per cent. While four per cent of Indians have had sex with their boss, 10 per cent have had sex with their best friend’s partner.
“Stressful lifestyles are driving Indians towards infidelity,” says psychiatrist Samir Parikh, MD. Is the Indian attitude towards sex changing? "Most definitely,” he agrees adding, “There has never been a better time to find answers, action and fulfilment." Expect the unexpected: It’s finally happening in India.
